AWS A5.28 – ER 100S-G

A 5KG pack of Weld Star 2.4mm (ER 100S-G) High Strength TIG Filler Rods. Copper coated with a combination of Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr) and Molybdenum (Mo) alloys. This solid wire designed for low temperature / high strength applications. Due to their chemical composition ER 100S-G filler rods have extreme crack resistance combined with superior mechanical properties and outstanding welding characteristics.  Working temperature of -50°C.

Typical applications include building industry works, bridges, tanks, railway transport, mining, shipbuilding and ground moving equipment.

The key alloys used in ER 100S-G TIG rods provide excellent resistance to a wide variety of issues that can be encountered during the welding process:

    • Nickel (Ni) – The addition of this element increases high temperature strength and corrosion resistance. It also has a good strength to weight ratio, as well as providing excellent protection against cracking and distortion.
    • Chromium (Cr) – Similar to Nickel (Ni), Chromium adds good levels of strength and toughness.  Corrosion and wear resistance is also increased.
    • Molybdenum (Mo) – Also increases strength, as well as good corrosion resistance, particularly in acid based solutions and liquid metals. Molybdenum also improves wear resistance and weldability.

ER 100S-G provides tensile strength of 730MPa and yield strength of 640MPa.  As a result of the difference between these two values, the ductile nature of this wire is increased. This is exhibited by its ability to endure twisting, misshaping and deforming without affecting the integrity of the finished weld.

What is the ER 100S-G Classification?

This is broken down into the following components: ‘ER’ is the abbreviation electrode or in this case filler wire. This is followed by the number 100 which represents the minimum tensile strength, in this case 100KSi (Kilo-Pounds per Square Inch). The ‘S’ indicates the wire is solid.  This may sometimes be represented as ‘C’ which advises the welding wire form is a composite.  Finally, the ending letter refers to the fact this is a wire which requires gas shielding.

In Conclusion

Weld Star (ER 100S-G) high strength TIG filler rods have excellent mechanical properties even at sub zero temperatures, down to -50°C.  Alloying elements Nickel(Ni), Chromium (Cr) and Molybdenum (Mo) increase levels of strength, toughness and impact resistance.  The filler wire also has good levels of corrosion resistance making for an ideal choice in many applications.
