A 5KG Pack of Weld Star 2.4mm (ER 80S-Ni1) Low Temperature TIG Wire. Copper coated Ni-Alloy (Ni 1.0%), solid wire designed for low temperature, fine grained and austempering steels. Providing excellent levels of strength, toughness and impact resistance, which is due to the addition of 1% Nickel. Even at sub zero temperatures of -50°C. This TIG wire also has excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for the offshore industry.

Suitable for welding in all positions. The combination of Manganese(Mn) and Silicon(Si) ensures optimum levels of deoxidisation and weld fluidity.  Typically this product is used for applications such as building up of cranes, transport, tanks, industrial facilities, equipment in general, pipelines, shipbuilding / marine industry and the petrochemical industry.

With good mechanical properties such as tensile strength (600MPa) and yield strength (480MPa).  As a result of the difference between these two values, the ductile nature of this wire is increased. This is exhibited by its ability to endure twisting, misshaping and deforming without affecting the integrity of the finished weld.

What is Austempering Steel?

Austempering is a heat treatment used on steel which creates a microstructure called bainite.  The key benefits of austempered steel are increased ductility and notch toughness, plus reduced levels of distortion.  The bainite microstructure is formed when austempered steel is cooled down rapidly.  Bainite also has excellent creep resistance qualities and can therefore withstand deformation caused by high temperatures and heavy loads.

 

What is the ER 80S-Ni1 Classification?

This is broken down into the following components: ‘ER’ is the abbreviation electrode or in this case filler wire. This is followed by the number 80 which represents the minimum tensile strength, in this case 80KSi (Kilo-Pounds per Square Inch). The ‘S’ indicates the wire is solid.  This may sometimes be represented as ‘C’ which advises the welding wire form is a composite.  Finally, the ending letter/number combination refers to the addition of 1% Nickel(Ni)
