Description

Weld Star – ER 80S-G | Corten TIG Rods (3.2mm) 5kg

AWS A5.28 – ER 80S-G

A 5KG Pack of Weld Star 1.6mm Corten ER 80S-G weather resistant TIG filler wire. Corten wire is copper coated and combined with Nickel (Ni).  Designed for use where weather resistance is a key factor, such as applications involving structural steels (Corten and other similar high strength low alloy options).  Used extensively for construction works.

As a result of the two main alloying elements Copper (Cu) and Nickel (Ni), Weld Star Corten (ER 80S-G) welding rods have excellent properties.  In particular, the capacity to withstand the effects of atmospheric corrosion.  Additional benefits include good levels of tensile and impact strength, as well as being suitable for sub zero working temperatures as low as -40°C.

Owing to the reddish rust or patina look that can be obtained from this filler wire it is often used in artistic applications. Particularly where a certain aesthetic appeal is required.  Other typical applications include construction of containers, tanks, bridges, building panels, chimneys, transportation and offshore platforms.

Features & Benefits
  • Excellent resistance against atmospheric corrosion
  • Sub zero working temperature as low as -40°C
  • Good levels of tensile strength
  • Designed for weather resistant applications
  • Elongation of upto 22% of original size
What is Corten?

The term CorTen is an abbreviation of the two main properties for this form of steel.  Which are CORrosion resistance and TENsile strength.  Created to provide an alternative option which does not require painting, plus develop a rust-like layer over the course of many years.

Corten, or weathering steel does not prevent rust.  The material allows the outer exposed surface to form a quick drying, thick rust which effectively forms a paint-like layer.  This rust coating then prevents the un-reacted material from the atmosphere to allow it to last longer.

What is the MPa Measurement?

MPa (Mega Pascal) is a standard measurement of pressure / tension and the strength of materials as defined in the International System of Weights and Measures.  See below for the acronym break down:

M = Mega (Standard matrix prefix meaning one million).

Pa = Pascal (From the surname of the inventor of the measurement – Blaise Pascal)

The Difference between Yield Strength and Tensile Strength

The main difference between these two measurements being Yield Strength refers to determining the maximum amount of stress which can be applied before permanent shape change. Whereas tensile strength defines the amount of load or stress a material can handle until it stretches or breaks. Tensile strength is also used to identify the point at which steel moves from elastic(temporary) to plastic(permanent) deformation.

In Conclusion

As shown above Weld Star ER 80S-G Corten TIG weather resistant filler rods have excellent weather resistance, making them the ideal choice for structural applications.  They also have exceptional resistance to atmospheric corrosion.  Corten 80S-G have superior tensile strength, and elongation capacity of upto 22% of original size, even at sub zero temperatures of -40°C.

Weld Star wire is a green wire, which is produced using virgin raw materials sourced from specialised steel mills, which ensures consistent reliability and quality.
