AWS A5.9 – ER 410

A 5kg pack of 2.4mm Weld Star ER 410 stainless steel TIG welding rods.  Designed for welding matching base materials.  Additionally used to deposit overlays on carbon steels, resulting in enhanced resistance to the effects of corrosion, erosion and abrasion.  Typical uses include the production of turbine parts, heat furnaces and refinery applications. 410 filler metals also play a role in industries such as petro-chemical plant and steel mills.

For the purposes of ensuring satisfactory levels of ductility in finished welds using 410 stainless steel filler wire it is important to carry out both preheat and post weld heat treatments.  Pre and post heat can significantly reduce the possibility of cracking issues.

Weld Star ER 410 stainless steel welding rods are ideal for welding or repairing 400 series stainless steels such as 410, 416, 420 and 431. The increased Chromium (Cr) content provides excellent resistance to the effects of corrosion particularly in high temperature environments.

PreHeat & Postweld Heat Treatments
  • PreHeat Treatment – This process involves heating the area around the weld joint prior to the actual weld being performed.  If a specific preheat temperature is required, this can be confirmed by using a Tempilstick™.  The key benefit of a preheat treatment is the reduction in the cooling rate of the weld. This results in moisture being driven out of the weld.  By preventing hydrogen build-up it is possible to avoid such issues as cracking.
  • Post Weld Heat Treatment – A controlled system involving the application of heat after a weld has been carried out. The applied heat is kept below the critical transformation temperature in order to maintain the structure of the completed weld.  The heat level is maintained for a predetermined length of time.  The key benefit’s of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) include alleviating residual stress, increase of strength as well as the reduction of cracking at the microstructural level.
