A 5kg pack of 2.4mm Weld Star ER 2209 stainless steel TIG welding rods.  Specifically designed for joining base metals of a similar composition such as 2205 duplex stainless steel. Known for its high tensile strength and excellent resistance to stress related corrosion issues.  2209 is extensively used for pipework and general fabrication particularly in the oil / gas and chemical industries. Also available in diameters of 1.6 and 2.4mm.

This Austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steel welding wire has excellent tensile strength.  This is due to the microstructure of the material which also provides elevated resistance to stress corrosion, cracking and pitting.  Combined with an exceptionally wide working temperature range from cryogenic levels (-150°C to -273°C) and up to 300°C.  The high levels of Chromium (Cr) in this filler wire ensure increased toughness and corrosion resistance. Suitable for joining duplex stainless steels with a Chromium (Cr) content of 22%.  These base materials are often referred to as 2205, because their chemical composition is generally around 22% Chromium (Cr) and 5% Nickel (Ni).

2209 Stainless exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as high tensile strength, stress related corrosion resistance and a large working temperature range. For this reason, it is used in a wide variety of industries and applications which require the ability to withstand the effects of harsh environments. The Nickel (Ni) content increases the finished welds ductility levels, meaning it is able to bend and misshape without cracking or causing a decrease in the structural integrity of the weld

What Is Duplex Stainless Steel?

This type of stainless steel benefits from the combination of two distinctly different microstructures (phases) of metal alloys, namely Austenitic and Ferritic from the stainless steel family. As a result of using a filler wire with two phases there is a notable improvement in the mechanical properties.  The following are some of the benefits:

Increased Strength – almost two times stronger than single phase alloys.

  • High Toughness and Ductility – Duplex stainless steels offer higher levels of formability under pressure over ferritic stainless steel without failing.  However, these values are lower than pure austenitic stainless steel.
  • Elevated Corrosion Resistance – Austenitic only stainless steels offer good levels of corrosion resistance. It is however worth considering Duplex metals will offer comparable corrosion resistance and in most cases increased levels. Duplex steels like 2209 MIG Wire have higher resistance to crevice corrosion and chloride pitting because of the inclusion of Chromium (Cr).

In Conclusion

2209 Stainless steel TIG wire has excellent mechanical properties.  It has high tensile strength and great resistance to a wide range of stress related corrosion issues, such as crevice corrosion and chloride pitting. Combined with a very impressive working temperature range from cryogenic (-150°C to -273°C) upto 300°C.  This is all due in no small part to the duplex construction of this filler material.
