A 5KG pack of Weld Star 3.2mm CrMo5 heat resistant TIG welding rods constructed from a copper coated low alloy steel. Designed for welding steels with high levels of heat resistance with typical applications such as pressure piping in steam power generation plants, boiler and heat exchanger tubes, chemical and petrochemical equipment. It is also used in oil and thermo electrical industries.

Alloyed with Chromium (Cr – 5%) and Molybdenum (Mo – 0.5%) to ensure good heat resistance up to a working temperature of 650°C. These elements also increase levels of resistance to various types of corrosion including pitting, crevice corrosion and intergranular corrosion.  Chromium (Cr) also increases material hardness.

CrMo5 exhibits excellent mechanical properties including tensile strength (660MPa) and yield strength (560MPa).  As a result of the difference between these two figures the ductile nature of the wire is increased.  This is exhibited by its ability to endure twisting, misshaping and deforming without affecting the integrity of the finished weld. Moreover, this wire has excellent elongation capabilities, with a breaking point of 22% increase to its original length.

Due to its high strength and excellent corrosion resistance Weld Star CrMo5 TIG filler rods are a preferred choice for environments where hot hydrogen gas is present.  This is because of the ability to withstand the effects of high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA).  This issue occurs at temperatures above 400°C and can result in serious failure.

What is the ER 90S-B6 Classification?

This is broken down into the following components: ‘ER’ is the abbreviation electrode or in this case filler wire. This is followed by the number 80 which represents the minimum tensile strength, in this case 80,000 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). The ‘S’ indicates the wire is solid.  This may sometimes be represented as ‘C’ which advises the welding wire form is a composite.  Finally, the ending letter/number combination (in this case B6) refers to the combination of Chromium (Cr – 5%) and Molybdenum (Mo – 0.5%) within the weld material.

In Conclusion

As shown above Weld Star CrMo5 (ER 80S-B6) TIG heat resistant filler rods are ideal for use in extreme environments and at working temperatures upto 650°C.  The filler metal can withstand the effects of various forms of corrosion and is used extensively in harsh environments.  CrMo5 has excellent elongation capabilities of upto 22% of it original size.
