A 5kg pack of Weld Star ArcTrode® E6013 VD Electrodes (2.5mm).  Good quality, yet at an attractive price point the Arctrode 6013 VD rods are specifically designed for Vertical Down (VD) welding. They combine the best of both Rutile and Cellulose.  This combination improves arc stability and reduces spatter, which decreases the time spent post-weld cleaning.  Due to their exceptional strike and re-striking characteristics, they are ideal for tack welding. They are supplied in factory fresh vacuum-sealed aluminum packaging.

With excellent weldability in all positions without requiring any change in the current settings.  6013 electrodes are widely used throughout a wide range of industries and for numerous types of applications. These include workshop and repair welding of mild and low alloyed steels.  Suitable for use on galvanised, primer painted steels and slightly rusted parts. They are arguably the most common of the welding rods.

While re-drying is not largely a requirement, if needed they can dry for 1 hour at a temperature of between 100°C and 110°C. ArcTrode VD Electrodes are suitable for machines with a low Open Circuit Voltage (to a minimum OCV of 50v).

Rutile / Cellulosic

Rutile – an oxide mineral composed of predominantly Titanium Dioxide (TiO²),  makes up part of the flux composition.  This flux gives a smooth bead appearance while also maintaining a stable arc. Furthermore, slag removal requires minimal effort.  Burning of the rod produces Carbon Dioxide shielding gas from the Rutile composite in the flux.

Cellulosic – while there is a smaller amount of cellulose in E6013 electrodes as compared to cellulosic electrodes (e.g. E6010) it still plays an important role.  Cellulose releases fairly high levels of Hydrogen gas during the welding process, which assists in the protection of the material being welded from contaminates such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen.  The exclusion of these elements helps to prevent defects in many metals.

What is Open Circuit Voltage?

Sometimes also known as no-load voltage, refers to the voltage that exists between the electrode and the workpiece while in the welding process and between the electrode and the earth outside of the welding process. In a similar fashion to the Hot Start method in Arc Welding, Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) delivers a higher voltage which in turn improves the ease of electrode ignition. Furthermore, it also helps to maintain a strong and stable arc during the welding process.

In Conclusion

As shown above 6013 Electrodes are widely considered to be the most popular option available. This is due in no small part to their excellent ability to maintain a stable arc and a clear reduction in the amount of spatter produced. Slag is easily removed with minimal effort.  Ideal for use in applications such as automotive repair, thin sheet metal welding, machine parts and general purpose fabrication. Specifically designed to be used in the vertical down welding position, but still suitable to be used in all welding positions.
