(ER 90S-B3)


A 5KG pack of Weld Star 2.4mm A33 TIG Welding Rods constructed from a copper coated low alloy steel. Designed for welding high pressure piping systems within harsh / demanding environments.  Additionally, also used for boiler work.

Typical applications include pressure piping in steam power generation plants, boiler and heat exchanger tubes, chemical and petrochemical equipment. A33 filler wire is also used in oil and thermo electrical industries.

Alloyed with Chromium (Cr – 2.25%) and Molybdenum (Mo – 1%) to ensure good heat resistance up to a working temperature of 600°C. These alloys also increase levels of resistance to various types of corrosion including pitting, crevice corrosion and intergranular corrosion.  Chromium (Cr) also increases material hardness

A33 TIG rods provide excellent mechanical properties including tensile strength of 640MPa and yield strength of 540MPa.  As a result of the difference between these two figures the ductile nature of the wire is increased.  This is exhibited by its ability to endure twisting, misshaping and deforming without affecting the integrity of the finished weld. Moreover, this wire has excellent elongation capabilities, with a breaking point of 22% increase to its original length.

Careful control of preheat, interpass temperatures and postweld heat treatment are all essential considerations to prevent issues such as hot cracking.

What is the ER 90S-B3 Classification?

This is broken down into the following components: ‘ER’ is the abbreviation electrode or in this case filler wire. This is followed by the number 90 which represents the minimum tensile strength, in this case 90,000 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). The ‘S’ indicates the wire is solid.  This may sometimes be represented as ‘C’ which advises the welding wire form is a composite.  Finally, the ending letter/number combination (in this case B3) refers to the combination of Chromium (Cr – 2.25%) and Molybdenum (Mo – 1%) within the weld material.
