A 5KG pack of Weld Star 3.2mm A31 TIG Rods for low alloy steel . Copper coated and heat resisting product which contains 0.5% Molybdenum (Mo) for increased tensile strength.

Weld deposits exhibit excellent quality and attractive bead appearance on carbon and low alloy steels. Suitable for operating at high currents giving a stable arc with a low amount of spatter. A31 (ER80S-D2) TIG filler wire can be used for single and multi pass welding requirements

The recommended working temperature is up to 500°C.  Typical uses include creep steels for construction steam boilers, pressure tanks, gas pipes, shipbuilding sector, petrochemical industry, heat exchangers, building of cranes and bridges.

A31 TIG wire has excellent mechanical properties including tensile strength of 670MPa and yield strength of 550MPa.  As a result of the difference between these two figures, the ductile nature of the wire is increased.  This is exhibited by its ability to endure twisting, misshaping and deforming without affecting the integrity of the finished weld. The wire has excellent elongation capabilities, with a breaking point of 24% increase to its original length.

What is creep resistance?

The term creep resistance refers to materials used in machines and facilities that are required to withstand high temperatures and high operating loads. Creep resistant materials must also be able to withstand the effects of high temperature corrosion. Furthermore, the term Creep can sometimes be referred to as cold flow.  Creep management is used in fields and applications such as nuclear power plants, jet engines, refineries and high capacity kilns.

What is the ER 80S-D2 Classification?

This is broken down into the following components: ‘ER’ is the abbreviation electrode or in this case filler wire. This is followed by the number 80 which represents the minimum tensile strength, in this case 80,000 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). The ‘S’ indicates the wire is solid.  This may sometimes be represented as ‘C’ which advises the welding wire form is a composite.  Finally, the ending letter/number combination (in this case D2) refers to the combination of Manganese(Mn) and Molybdenum(Mo).  With Manganese(Mn) acting as the deoxidising agent.

In Conclusion

A31 (ER80S-D2) low alloy steel TIG welding wire has an excellent combination of mechanical properties including good levels of toughness and high levels of ductility.  This wire will operate at high current, with minimal spatter. Due to the excellent elongation capabilities A31 wire has a breaking point of 24% increase to its original size.
