A 5kg pack of Weld Star 317 Stainless Steel TIG welding rods available in a variety of diameters.  Austenitic stainless steel designed for use in highly corrosive environments for welding materials of a similar chemical composition.

317 TIG wire is particularly useful where crevice and pitting corrosion presents a significant issue.  Such environments for use include Chemical & Petrochemical processing plants.  Weld Star 317 TIG Filler rods can also be used for joining dissimilar materials such as steel to stainless steel or dissimilar stainless steels to each other.

Increased amounts of Molybdenum (Mo) enhances the resistance to both forms of corrosion mentioned above (crevice and pitting).  Due to the low carbon content there is a distinct reduction in the possibility of intergranular carbide precipitation leading to weld failure.  Please be aware that Weld Star 317 Stainless Steel TIG Rods are not suitable for service in applications where structural temperatures are higher than 400°C.  They are also not suitable for cryogenic applications.

Weld Star 317 stainless steel TIG rods also have significant levels of both Nickel (Ni) and Chromium (Cr) resulting in greater resistance to issues of corrosion, enhancing impact strength, toughness and wear resistance.

Typically used for applications in the chemical and petrochemical industries.  Additionally used in marine environments, papermaking and food processing industries.

Intergranular Carbide Precipitation.

This issue can occur during the post weld cooling down phase where carbides such as Chromium Carbides form at the grain boundaries.  As a result, this can have a detrimental impact on the mechanical properties of both the base metals and the weld deposit. In particular resistance to the effects of corrosion.

In Conclusion

As shown above Weld Star 317 stainless steel TIG rods have an excellent range of mechanical properties including wear resistance and impact strength. They are particularly noted for their ability to withstand the effects of high levels of corrosion in harsh environments.  Such industries include chemical / petrochemical, papermaking and food processing plants. With the capacity to resist crevice and pitting corrosion, plus intergranular carbide precipitation.

Please note Weld Star 317 TIG Stainless Steel TIG Filler Rods are not suitable for structural service above 400°C or Cryogenic applications.
