A 0.5kg GrabPak of 5356 Aluminium TIG rods (2.4mm).  5356 Aluminium TIG wire is suitable for welding magnesium bearing aluminium, alloys such as 5251 (N4), 5154 (N5), 5454 (N51), and also heat treatable alloys 6063 (H9), 6061 (H20) and 6082 (H30).

Super handy, these grab packs are great for hobbyists needing smaller quantities of rods or for small maintenance jobs.  Perfect also for site work, these grab packs are supplied in a plastic re-useable tube to keep them dry and undamaged.

Designed for use as general purpose aluminium TIG filler wire, by combining 5% magnesium which provides excellent corrosion resistance and unprecedented strength.

As a result of its high shear and tensile strength, 5356 Aluminium TIG Rods are a popular choice for most types of TIG welding with aluminium.  Additionally perfect for use in all welding positions except vertical down.

What is weld cracking?

Weld cracking can have very significant consequences particularly as it increases high-stress intensity.  As a result, this can cause unexpected weld failure.  Weld cracking is broken down into two categories as detailed below:

  • Hot Cracks – Formed during the cooling process immediately after welding.
  • Cold Cracks – When there has been a delay between the crack forming and the weld being finished.

Additionally, weld cracking can occur during the weld process itself which is likely to be caused by fatigue or corrosion. Treatment of a weld crack will vary depending on how and at what stage the crack has formed.  This must be established first before any corrective action is taken.

In Conclusion

As shown above, GrabPak 5356 AlMn TIG filler wire has excellent resistance to corrosion.  Additionally good levels of both shear and tensile strength.  Furthermore, use 5356 filler wire for welding components that require anodising.  Overall, the 0.5kg GrabPak size is ideal for small maintenance jobs and projects.
