A 15kg spool of 1.0mm 309LSi Stainless Steel MIG Wire. Used extensively for joining and overlaying of similar stainless steel and also dissimilar steels.  Ideal applications include fusing buffer layers before hardfacing, plus processes within chemical, power generation and automotive industries.

The chemical composition has low levels of carbon(0.1%), as a result this reduces the risks of intergranular carbide precipitation which can cause a weakening of the weld.  This in turn can lead to the weld cracking under stress. Furthermore lower levels of carbon increase resistance to intergranular corrosion, this is achieved without the requirement of alloys such as niobium or titanium which act as stabilisers. 309LSi Stainless Steel MIG wire displays good performance qualities in carbon rich environments (aka carburising atmospheres).

An increased amount of Silicon(Si) ensures good levels of fluidity in the weld puddle, this results in a smoother deposit appearance. 309LSi filler wire is able to withstand the effects of high temperature oxidation and corrosion upto 300°C. The wire is precision wound and layered to ensure superior wire feeding characteristics.

Ferrite content within 309LSi Stainless Steel MIG wire results in less susceptibility to cracking.

What is Intergranular Carbide Precipitation?

In filler wire with a high chromium content such as 309LSi, there is an attraction between chromium and carbon.  The result of this attraction leads to the formation of a thin intergranular layer of Chromium Carbides. The main consequence of this formation is a possible weakening of the structure of the weld, which can lead to the weld cracking. Because of the chemical composition of 309LSi MIG wire the prospect of this issue is significantly reduced.

What Does High Temperature Oxidation Mean?

It is a chemical reaction between atmospheric oxygen and metallic materials that produces corrosion at elevated temperatures. This corrosion comes in the form of a high temperature oxide layer.  While it is detrimental in many cases and can lead to the weakening of materials.  Conversely, it is sometimes a desired effect as the oxide layer produced acts as a protective layer to further corrosive issues.

Typical applications include joining high-strength steels, un- and low alloyed heat treatable steels, stainless, ferritic chromium and austenitic chrome-nickel steels, austenitic manganese steels. 309LSi is suitable for joining clad steels. Base materials to be welded: High strength, unalloyed and alloyed heat treatable steels; stainless, ferritic chromium and austenitic CrNi steels; austenitic manganese steels. Chemically resistant weld claddings ranging from ferritic-pearlitic steels to fine grain steels, incl. high temperature fine grain steels. Dissimilar joining.

In Conclusion

As shown above, 309LSi MIG wire has good levels of corrosion resistance.  The addition of Silicon(Si) ensures excellent weld puddle fluidity leading to the smooth bead appearance of the finished weld. Furthermore, the silicon content also significantly reduces the amount of spatter and porosity encountered during the welding process. 309LSi MIG welding wire is also highly resistant to issues concerning high temperature oxidation. To summarise this is an ideal choice of filler wire for use with similar and dissimilar steels
